What is the philosophical base of TiE?
TiE's philosophical base is a strong mix of the Silicon Valley culture of economic value creation through Entrepreneurship, and the ancient Indian tradition of Guru/Chela or Teacher/Disciple) relationship. This gives rise to a very productive mentoring relationship between experienced and budding entrepreneurs through the two-way exchange of value in experience and knowledge.

How and when was TiE started?
The concept of TiE was born at the end of 1992 at a lunch meeting of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and professionals. Initially a small group of individuals launched the monthly activities and attracted others. By 1994, TiE became a formal organization with a larger group and significant visibility. TiE remains a strong volunteer organization with the single-minded focus on its objective of advancing entrepreneurship.

In addition to the impressive membership numbers, what are TiE's other accomplishments?
It is our estimate that those associated with TiE have created businesses with market value of about $75 Billion since 1992. There are hundreds of new companies in the making. The role and impact of TiE, as one can surmise, in these enterprises varies.

How does a TiE chapter get started?
There are three prerequisites for the start of a chapter in a city or geographical area.

  • A core team of successful entrepreneur (most of whom are potential charter members) makes an assessment of the feasibility of a TiE chapter in their location.
  • Among the team there are 2 or 3 individuals who are willing to act as the "lightning rods" and are able to take the ownership of the TiE activities.
The location is able to demonstrate the discipline of holding monthly meetings with regularity.

Upon request TiE Silicon Valley (or future global TiE organization) may agree to the start of a new chapter or it may decline it with due reasoning or suggestions.

What are the critical success factors for a chapter's growth?
Each chapter requires a few prominent individuals who can lead the charge, supported by unselfish support of volunteers who can conduct the activities of the chapter with excellence. In larger chapters with growing events, sponsors also become a vital part.

How is TiE helping the Indus region?
By helping start 10 chapters in India, the TiE movement is very much present in India. We are also attempting and encouraging chapters in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The Indian Government has also sought the help of TiE members on advancing its economic policies. We believe that TiE will become a strong catalyst in the new economic growth of the Indus region.

Is TiE engaged in any charitable or educational activities?
TiE is not directly engaged in any charitable or educational activities. However, several prominent Charter Members of TiE are leading the charge through significant contributions to and creation of institutions of learning in US and India. Similarly, there are individuals engaged in significant charitable efforts of their choice. Tie encourages all such efforts and takes pride in the initiatives of the membership.

How is TiE financially supported?
The membership dues are the basic source of funds for the TiE chapters. Expenses associated with activities such as TiEcon are supported by admission fees, and in some chapters by sponsorships.

How do the sponsors benefit from their support of TiE?
It is truly a win/win relationship. TiE is able to maintain excellence in its programs with the support of the sponsors. Many of the sponsors help TiE with their participation in panels and seminars. They all receive good visibility among TiE members and in fact many are engaged in business relationships with TiE related companies.

What are the long-term goals of TiE?
TiE aspires to continue the expansion of its chapters and membership worldwide, while maintaining the clear focus on its objectives and philosophies. TiE will therefore continue to emphasize, encourage, and support entrepreneurs everywhere, who subscribe to its values. TiE also strives to be a catalyst in the formulation of economic policies of open markets everywhere. In summary, TiE will continue to push for global prosperity through entrepreneurship.

What can you tell us about TiEcon 2000?
The theme for our 7th annual event, TiEcon 2000 was " Entrepreneurship in the 21st century". We had about 70 world-class keynote speakers and panelists etc. The seminar tracks were structured to cater to the needs of entrepreneurs in different stages i.e. early, middle and established enterprises. There were 67 sponsors (vs. 40 in 1999), many of who contributed to the sessions. And had a "sold out" situation with over 1900 attendees (vs. 1100 in 1999). About 25% of the attendees were from out of town, including overseas.

The overall success of TiEcon depends on over 150 volunteers who manage just about every aspect of TiEcon. It takes about 6 months of team effort on the part of the volunteer team to put out this significant event for TiE. This was the 7th such event for TiE in Silicon Valley.

This year's new features at TiEcon included a 50-selected Company Showcase. These TiE related companies presented themselves on the 2nd day of the conference. This was also the first year where we did the web casting of the conference, with some segments live and the entire conference being available in the future. Several individuals who could not attend the conference benefited from the web casting.
